Healthy Diet for jaundice patients

A pathological condition when bilirubin concentration is increased in the human body due to improper functioning of the liver and digestive juices is known as jaundice in medical language.

As we know, every food material tends to go through the liver for processing and extraction of nutrients for physiological functions. Also, another function of the liver is to remove toxins and damaged cells. So liver health is directly impacted by diet and lifestyle. Generally, visible symptoms of a jaundice patient are yellowing of skin and eyes that happens when bilirubin concentration increases beyond 3 mg/dL. For these jaundice patients, a specific diet plan must be followed for quick recovery.

Consume more nuts and legumes

Nuts and legumes are known  to be enriched with antioxidants like phenolic acid and vitamin E. that are a very good source of dietary fiber which eventually supports liver health. You can eat cashew nuts, walnuts, and soaked almonds regularly during jaundice to promote good liver health. Keep in mind to not consume more than 10 nuts per day.

Fruits and vegetables for digestive juice secretion

Fruits and vegetables produce digestive enzymes that help to reduce bilirubin concentration in blood. To promote the secretion of digestive juice, consume some natural products like honey or fruits like pineapple, mango, orange, and papaya. You can also eat avocado, grapes, grapefruit, and brussels sprouts in the form of salads including  sesame, chia, and pumpkin seeds in your salad bowl.

Drink plenty of water daily

As we know, more water consumption promotes the maximum removal of toxins from the body, eventually promoting a healthy liver. In order to achieve this, you must consume at least 4 liters of water daily. It is  also known for  improving blood circulation.

Drink herbal tea or coffee regularly

avoiding energy drinks like tea or coffee during jaundice is not at all a good idea. Moderate consumption of tea or coffee improves the liver condition. It is mniwn for stimulating the secretion of essential enzymes and digestive juices. Furthermore, herbal tea can reduce inflammation  and treat liver cirrhosis. Another major benefit obtained by coffee or tea is that they act as an antioxidant to stimulate toxin removal.

Foods not to eat during jaundice

Just like eating essential fruits and vegetables can promote liver health, consumption of some other foods can deteriorate it. It is advised to avoid several mouthwatering items that inclides controlling your fat intake, especially saturated fats. Cooking with unsaturated fat like sunflower or safflower oils can be beneficial in this case. Comsumption of excess iron can also deteriorate liver health, so keep a check on that too. So, you must consume iron food in moderation such as lentils, spinach, and broccoli. Also, you need to avoid refined sugar like high-fructose corn syrup which leads to liver damage. Salt is another compound that should be consumed in moderation as excess sodium is bad for your liver.

Special care must be taken about bilirubin concentration in your child as it affects young children and newborns quickly and mostly.
