Priyanka Chopra Jonas Opens Up About Being Bullied In High School

The Bollywood actress revealed that she was bullied in High school for her skin tone and admitted that going to high school was really tough for her.

In an interview with the Associated Press, former Miss World pageant winner shared her unpleasant experiences while studying in U.S high school. She said that she was treated differently because she was brown.

She told AP,” I was treated differently because I’m brown. I had, you know, really racist behavior when I was in high school in 10th grade. I was called ‘Brownie’, ‘Curry’, (told to) ‘go back on the elephant you came on,’ and that really affected me when I was a kid and affected my self-esteem.

In the previous interview with International Business Times in 2012, she shared that she was a gawky imperfect child. She explained, “My life was the epitome of imperfection. I’m not perfect like Aishwarya Rai (Indian Actress and former Miss World winner), beautiful, stunning.

I was a gawky kid, had low self-esteem, came from a modest middle –class background, had white marks on my legs, but the only thing I knew was to work hard and learn. I didn’t know how to act or win a beauty pageant. But I was damn hard working. Today, my legs sell 12 brands,” she explained.

She told that the reason she is speaking out because she believes racial bias is a learned behavior. The way we treat people differently comes from cultural subliminal messaging that has happened over eons, Chopra said.

She further said,” I do want to create a world for my future kids where they don’t have to think about diversity, where they are not talking about it because it’s normal. The more we talk about it and open other people’s eyes and say, “It doesn’t have to be that way and give them more examples, I guess society will change,” she added.

Priyanka Chopra was born in the state of Bihar in India. She moved to the United States when she was 13 to live with her aunt and attended high school in Massachusetts, Iowa and Queens, New York City.

She married Nick Jonas in December. Now Priyanka Chopra became an ambassador of skincare company Obagi and its Skinclusion Campaign. She is also representing other brands.
